How to Develop a Faith That Can Move Mountains

Jesus often spoke about faith, and one of His most striking statements was: “If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible unto you” (Matthew 17:20). Moving mountains is symbolic of overcoming seemingly impossible obstacles through trust in God. But how can a believer cultivate such unwavering faith?

1. Understand What Biblical Faith Is

Faith is not wishful thinking or blind optimism. Biblically, faith is trusting God’s character, promises, and power, that He can and wants to do something for you. Hebrews 11:1 defines it as: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Developing mountain-moving faith begins with understanding that faith is grounded in God Himself, not in circumstances or personal ability.

2. Feed Your Faith with the Word of God

Faith grows when we immerse ourselves in Scripture. Romans 10:17 says: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Reading and meditating on God’s promises, recounting examples of His past faithfulness, and memorizing key verses strengthen confidence in His ability to act. Stories like David defeating Goliath (1 Samuel 17) or Joshua’s leadership at Jericho (Joshua 6) demonstrate how God honors faith.

3. Pray with Expectation

Prayer is the channel through which faith expresses itself. When praying, believe that God hears and can act according to His will. Mark 11:24 reminds us: “Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.” Faith grows when prayers are offered in full trust, not doubt or hesitation.

4. Step Out in Obedience

Faith requires action. James 2:17 explains: “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.” Obedience to God’s guidance, even when uncertain or challenging, demonstrates faith in action. Sometimes, “moving mountains” requires the first step of trust, even before results are visible.

5. Perseverance

Obstacles often do not disappear immediately. Developing mountain-moving faith involves steadfastness. Romans 5:3-4 says: “We glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope.” Persevering in faith during trials deepens trust in God’s power and timing.

6. Surround Yourself with Faithful Encouragement

Community strengthens faith. Hebrews 10:24-25 urges believers to: “Consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together.” Observing and learning from others who walk by faith, studying their testimonies, and encouraging one another builds confidence that God can act.

7. Reject Doubt and Fear

Faith that moves mountains cannot coexist with persistent doubt. Matthew 21:21-22 highlights this tension: “Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not…all things whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.” Combat fear with Scripture, affirm God’s promises, and focus on His ability rather than the size of the “mountain.”

8. Reflect on God’s Past Faithfulness

Looking back at God’s work in your life and the lives of others strengthens faith. Remembering answered prayers, miracles, and providential guidance reminds the believer that God is consistent and powerful, building trust for future challenges.

9. Maintain a Humble Heart

Faith grows best in humility. Recognizing that God, not self, is the source of power prevents pride from undermining trust. James 4:6 reminds us that “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” Humility allows God to work through our faith rather than our human effort.

Developing faith that can move mountains is a lifelong journey of trust, obedience, and perseverance. It begins with understanding what true faith is, immersing oneself in God’s Word, praying expectantly, taking obedient steps, persevering through trials, and staying humble. Mountains may not always be literal, but the spiritual, emotional, and practical obstacles in life can be overcome when faith rests fully on God’s power and promises.

Faith is not measured by human strength or understanding but by confidence in the One who holds all things in His hands. As you cultivate faith through Scripture, prayer, obedience, and perseverance, you position yourself to witness God’s extraordinary power working in ways beyond human comprehension.
