What Is the Law of Christ

The Law of Christ is the standard of obedience and love that Jesus gave to His followers. It is not a law of works designed to earn salvation, but a law of grace that flows from a heart transformed by God. In Galatians 6:2, Paul instructs believers to “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” This verse reveals that the essence of Christ’s law is love expressed in action toward others.

Unlike the Old Testament law, which focused on rules, rituals, and ceremonies, the Law of Christ centers on love and the inward condition of the heart. Jesus summarized the law in Matthew 22:37–40, saying that the greatest commandments are to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and to love your neighbor as yourself. All other commands in Scripture find their fulfillment in this principle of love. The Law of Christ is therefore relational rather than merely regulatory, guiding believers in how they live before God and others.

The Law of Christ also emphasizes freedom from sin through grace. In the Old Covenant, the law revealed sin but could not provide power to overcome it. Under the Law of Christ, believers are empowered by the Holy Spirit to walk in righteousness. Romans 8:3–4 explains that God sent His Son to fulfill the law on behalf of humanity, allowing believers to walk according to the Spirit. Obedience to the Law of Christ is therefore not a burdensome obligation but the natural fruit of a heart united to Christ.

Practical expressions of the Law of Christ include acts of mercy, forgiveness, humility, and selflessness. Bearing one another’s burdens, forgiving those who wrong us, and serving others without expectation of reward are all part of fulfilling this law. It calls believers to live ethically, not to earn favor with God, but because Christ’s love has already transformed their hearts.

Colossians 3:16 encourages us to teach, admonish, and support one another with wisdom and gratitude, showing how the law governs not only personal conduct but also relationships within the church.

In summary, the Law of Christ is the law of love, grace, and obedience born from a heart transformed by Jesus. It is fulfilled by walking in the Spirit, serving others, and living in a way that reflects the character of Christ. Unlike the ceremonial law, it does not condemn or burden but leads believers into freedom, spiritual growth, and deep fellowship with God and His people.
