What Makes a Good Soul-Winner?

Proverbs 11:30 tells us, “…he that winneth souls is wise.” Soul-winning or sharing the gospel and helping others believe in Jesus is one of the greatest privileges of the Christian life. But what makes someone a good soul-winner? It’s not just passion, but also preparation, discernment, and practice. This guide will help you evaluate and grow in your evangelism skills.

1. Approach with Boldness and Clarity

A good soul-winner must be confident and clear when speaking. This means being loud enough to be heard, speaking with genuine emotion, and avoiding robotic delivery. People respond to sincerity and conviction.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I sound excited about the gospel?

  • Am I speaking loudly and clearly enough for people to hear me?

2. Engage with Urgency and Compassion

Effective soul-winners show passion and care. They urgently desire for people to be saved, yet they approach with kindness. They aren’t pushy but are persuasive, always looking for opportunities to speak about salvation.

Tips:

  • Pay attention to body language and reactions.

  • Lead the conversation but don’t dominate it.

  • Stay alert to your environment.

3. Be Clear and Organized

A strong gospel presentation flows in a clear, logical order. Avoid rambling. Stick to the essentials:

  1. Everyone is a sinner (Romans 3:23).

  2. Sin brings the judgment of hell (Romans 6:23).

  3. Jesus died and rose again for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

  4. We are saved by faith alone (Ephesians 2:8-9).

  5. Salvation is eternal and secure (John 10:28).

Don’t rush, but don’t waste time either. Be efficient and respectful of people’s time.

4. Use Your Bible Effectively

Soul-winners should always carry and use a Bible. Open it, show people the verses, and trace the words with your finger as you read. This emphasizes that it’s not your opinion, it’s God’s word.

Make sure:

  • The Bible is clearly visible to the person.

  • You quote and show enough verses to support your message.

5. Communicate with Skill and Care

When people ask questions or offer objections, respond with wisdom, kindness, and confidence. Use clear language and helpful examples. Avoid church jargon that might confuse someone unfamiliar with the Bible.

Also, when you get to the prayer, be clear:

  • Help them understand they must believe, not just repeat words.

  • Invite them to call upon Jesus for eternal life (Romans 10:13).

6. Apply the Message Personally

Don’t just speak generally. Help the person understand:

  • They were trusting in themselves, not in Jesus.

  • Without salvation, they were headed for hell.

  • False churches preach false gospels.

Only after this should you guide them in prayer, clearly explaining the gospel again as you do.

7. Grow with Feedback

Like any skill, soul-winning gets better with practice. Have a mentor or experienced soul-winner go with you and give honest feedback. Focus on improving in these areas:

  • Presentation

  • Clarity

  • Confidence

  • Biblical use

  • Personal connection

Your goal isn’t perfection—it’s fruitfulness.

Take away this:
Becoming a great soul-winner doesn’t happen overnight. It takes prayer, patience, and practice. But every Christian can grow in this calling. Remember: God isn’t looking for professionals—he’s looking for faithful people with a heart to reach the lost.
