What the Bible Says About Interracial Marriage

Interracial marriage is a topic that has stirred many opinions and tensions across cultures and generations. Yet, when we turn to the Bible, we find that Scripture offers a clear perspective. The Word of God does not condemn marriage between people of different races or ethnic backgrounds. Instead, it calls believers to focus on unity in Christ, not on the color of one’s skin or the culture one comes from.

In the Old Testament, God gave the Israelites strict commands not to intermarry with certain nations (Deuteronomy 7:3-4). However, the reason was not racial, but spiritual. Those nations worshipped false gods, and God knew that such marriages could lead Israel into idolatry. The concern was about faithfulness to the Lord, not about ethnicity or race. For instance, Moses married Zipporah, a Midianite woman, and later married a Cushite woman, and God did not condemn him for it. When Miriam and Aaron criticized Moses for marrying a Cushite woman, God Himself rebuked them (Numbers 12:1-10). This story shows that God does not oppose interracial unions, but He does oppose pride and prejudice.

In the New Testament, there is no command forbidding marriage between people of different races. What Scripture emphasizes instead is spiritual unity. 2 Corinthians 6:14 warns believers not to be “unequally yoked” with unbelievers. This means a Christian should marry another Christian, someone who shares faith in Christ. The issue is not about where the person comes from, but whether they walk in the same spiritual light. When both partners love and serve the same Lord.

The Bible makes it clear that all humans share a common origin. Acts 17:26 says, “And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth. In God’s eyes, there is only one race, the human race. Sin has divided people by pride and prejudice, but Christ came to tear down those walls. Galatians 3:28 says, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” Faith in Christ unites us beyond race, culture, and background.

While the Bible allows interracial marriage, couples must still approach it with wisdom. Cultural differences can create unique challenges in communication, family traditions, and expectations. Couples should take time to understand and respect each other’s backgrounds. They should also prepare to face societal opinions or prejudice with love and patience, knowing that their marriage can be a testimony of God’s grace and unity. A Christ-centered relationship can shine as a powerful witness of how God brings people together in love beyond earthly boundaries.

What matters most is not the color of our skin but the condition of our hearts before God. The Lord looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). If both individuals are believers who seek to honor Christ in their relationship, their marriage is blessed in His sight, regardless of ethnicity. Interracial marriage is not a sin, nor is it against God’s design. In fact, it reflects the beautiful diversity of God’s creation and the unity that is found in His kingdom.

Heaven itself will be a place filled with redeemed believers from “every nation, and kindred, and people, and tongue” (Revelation 7:9). The church on earth should reflect that heavenly unity, showing that in Christ there are no barriers of color or culture, only the bond of love that flows from God’s Spirit. Therefore, let every believer walk in love, reject prejudice, and embrace the truth that we are all one in Christ Jesus.

"I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character". Martin Luther King Jr.
