Why Jesus Will Reign at His Second Coming
The Bible is filled with promises that Jesus Christ will one day return to establish His reign on earth. Unlike His first coming, when He came in humility to die for the sins of the world, His second coming will be in power and glory to rule as King of kings and Lord of lords (Revelation 19:11–16). This future reign is not symbolic or spiritual only, it is a literal, visible kingdom on earth, fulfilling centuries of prophecy and bringing God’s perfect justice to the world.
The Prophetic Promise
From the earliest Scriptures, God revealed that the Messiah would reign forever. The promise to David in 2 Samuel 7:16 declares, “And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.” While this was not fulfilled in the earthly kings of Israel, it will be fulfilled perfectly in Jesus Christ, the Son of David.
Prophets like Isaiah foresaw this reign:
“Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom…” (Isaiah 9:7)
At His first coming, Jesus did not take David’s throne, but at His second coming, He will reign from Jerusalem over all the nations (Zechariah 14:9, 16–17).
The Purpose of His Reign
Christ’s reign at His return will accomplish several purposes:
-
To Fulfill God’s Promises – God’s covenants with Israel, including the Abrahamic and Davidic covenants, promised a land, a people, and a kingdom. These will be fully realized during the millennial reign (Genesis 15:18–21; Psalm 89:3–4).
-
To Bring Justice to the Earth – The world today is filled with corruption and injustice. Christ will rule with righteousness, executing judgment without partiality (Isaiah 11:4–5).
-
To Restore Creation – The curse placed on creation in Genesis will be lifted, resulting in peace among nations and even harmony in nature (Isaiah 11:6–9; Romans 8:21).
The Manner of His Coming
The second coming will be a public, visible event. Matthew 24:30 says, “Then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven… and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.” Unlike His humble birth in Bethlehem, His return will be accompanied by heavenly armies and unmistakable power (Revelation 19:14–15).
This coming will immediately follow after a period of great tribulation (Matthew 24:21), during which the nations will be gathered for judgment (Matthew 25:31–32).
The Millennial Kingdom
Once Christ returns, He will establish a thousand-year reign on earth, known as the Millennium (Revelation 20:4–6). During this time:
-
Satan will be bound and unable to deceive the nations.
-
Christ will reign from Jerusalem as the world’s rightful King.
-
The saints will reign with Him in glorified bodies.
-
Nations will experience peace, prosperity, and righteousness.
Eternal Reign Beyond the Millennium
The millennial reign will transition into the eternal state when the new heaven and new earth are created (Revelation 21:1–4). In this eternal kingdom, there will be no sin, no death, and no sorrow. Christ’s reign will never end (Daniel 7:14; Luke 1:33).
Jesus will reign at His second coming to fulfill prophecy, keep God’s promises, bring perfect justice, and restore creation. While His first coming was for salvation, His second will be for dominion. For the believer, this is a source of great hope and motivation to live faithfully until He comes. As Revelation 22:20 reminds us, “Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”
