What Will You Become?
Every person, at some point in life, stands at a quiet crossroads of the soul and faces a question that cannot be ignored: What will I become? It is not merely a question about career paths, financial success, or social influence. It reaches far deeper than public image or outward accomplishments. It touches the core of identity, purpose, destiny, and eternal significance.
From childhood dreams to adult responsibilities, we are always in the process of becoming something. The world offers many answers to the question of identity. Some voices insist that you become whatever you choose to be. Others argue that you become whatever life circumstances shape you into. Still others define identity by achievements, abilities, or the opinions of others. But the Bible presents a different, higher, and far more powerful truth: you ultimately become what God shapes you to be when you yield your life into His hands.
God is not simply interested in what you do. He is deeply concerned with who you are becoming. The Christian life is not a static label. It is a journey of transformation, a process of being molded, refined, and conformed into the image of Christ.
And the path of becoming is shaped by several key realities.
1. You Become What You Focus On
Your life is always moving in the direction of your dominant focus. What you consistently feed your mind, heart, and spirit will shape your attitudes, habits, desires, and destiny. Scripture reminds us of this profound truth:
“As he thinketh in his heart, so is he…”
(Proverbs 23:7, KJV)
Your inner meditations eventually become your outward life. If your thoughts are filled with fear, bitterness, envy, or worldly ambition, your life will inevitably reflect those values. But when your heart and mind are anchored in God’s truth, His character begins to shine through you.
Focus is not accidental. It is a discipline. The world constantly competes for your attention, offering distraction, noise, and false definitions of success. Yet God calls us to lift our eyes higher:
“Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth…”
(Isaiah 45:22, KJV)
Whatever you fix your gaze upon shapes your becoming. If you look to Christ, you grow toward Christ.
2. You Become What You Submit To
No one is neutral. Every life is being shaped by something. The question is not whether you will be shaped, but by whom. Culture shapes some people. Pride shapes others. For many, personal desires become the master of life. But God invites us into a different path, the path of surrender.
“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me…”
(Luke 9:23, KJV)
True transformation does not happen on the surface. It is not a change of behavior alone. It is the deep work of the Holy Spirit, reshaping the heart, renewing the will, and producing a Christlike spirit within us.
Paul testified to this reality when he said:
“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me…”
(Galatians 2:20, KJV)
The more we surrender to Christ, the more our identity is aligned with His purpose. Submission is not weakness. It is the gateway to becoming who God designed us to be.
3. You Become What You Choose to Obey
Becoming is shaped by decisions. Every choice either strengthens your walk with God or weakens it. Jesus made it clear that obedience is the true expression of love:
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
(John 14:15, KJV)
Disobedience does not merely break rules. It reshapes character and bends the heart away from God’s calling. Many destinies are delayed, not because God withheld purpose, but because people resisted obedience.
Yet obedience, even in the small unseen choices, builds spiritual character. Every act of faithfulness forms the inner life God is developing in you. Becoming is not about one dramatic decision, but about daily obedience over time.
4. You Become What You Persevere Through
Life’s trials are not interruptions to your becoming. They are part of it. God often forms His strongest servants in seasons of pressure, uncertainty, and struggle. The fires of testing do not destroy God’s people. They refine them.
“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations…
But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
(James 1:2, 4, KJV)
You are not defined by what you avoid. You are shaped by what you endure with faith. Perseverance molds maturity. Storms strengthen trust. Valleys deepen dependence. God uses every season to shape the person He is forming within you.
Nothing you pass through in faith is wasted.
5. You Become What God Sees in You
While people judge by appearance, performance, or reputation, God looks at the heart. Long before others see potential in you, God already knows who you are and who you are becoming.
“Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee…”
(Jeremiah 1:5, KJV)
Your identity is not accidental. Your existence is not random. God’s knowledge of you is intentional and filled with purpose. You are not a mystery to Him. You are a calling in progress.
What God sees in you is greater than what you see in yourself.
So… What Will You Become?
You become:
• Someone who reflects the character of Christ
• Someone strengthened and purified through trials
• Someone whose life is guided by truth
• Someone who walks by faith and not by fear
• Someone whose choices honor God
• Someone shaped for eternal purpose
The Christian journey is not promised to be easy, but it is promised to be meaningful. Those who keep pressing forward in faith walk toward a divine calling that reaches beyond this world.
“I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
(Philippians 3:14, KJV)
You are not merely existing. You are becoming. And when your life is placed in God’s hands, you are becoming exactly who He created you to be.
A Prayer for Those Who Desire to Become What God Designed
Lord God,
Thank You for creating me with purpose and intention.
Help me fix my eyes upon You and not the distractions of this world.
Teach me to walk in obedience, to surrender my will,
and to allow Your Spirit to shape me day by day.
Strengthen me through trials, purify my heart,
and guide my steps according to Your calling.
Make me into the person You designed me to become.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
