Dwight Lyman Moody, better known as D. L. Moody, was one of the most influential evangelists of the 19th century. Born on February 5, 1837, in Northfield, Massachusetts, Moody rose from humble beginnings to become a powerful preacher, passionate soul-winner, and founder of several Christian institutions that continue to impact lives today.

Moody had little formal education and worked as a shoe salesman in Boston during his early years. While working there, he was led to Christ by his Sunday School teacher, Edward Kimball. This personal encounter with the gospel transformed his life. Soon after, Moody began teaching Sunday School and ministering to the poor in Chicago. He had a deep burden for souls and a heart for practical Christian service.

During the American Civil War, Moody ministered to Union soldiers, bringing them the hope of Christ. After the war, he devoted himself fully to evangelism. He traveled across the United States and the United Kingdom, preaching to crowds that sometimes numbered in the tens of thousands. His preaching was simple, direct, and centered on the message of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. He once said, “Faith makes all things possible. Love makes all things easy.”

Though not formally ordained, Moody’s ministry was marked by deep conviction, humility, and the empowering work of the Holy Spirit. He worked closely with singer Ira D. Sankey, whose gospel music drew large audiences and softened hearts to receive the gospel message. Together, they held evangelistic campaigns that shook cities and stirred churches.

Moody founded the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 1886, an institution dedicated to equipping Christians for gospel ministry. He also established schools and Bible conferences, including the Northfield Conference, which promoted spiritual renewal and missionary vision. Through these efforts, Moody's influence extended far beyond his lifetime.

He died on December 22, 1899, but his legacy endures. D. L. Moody’s life is a testimony of what God can do through a surrendered heart. He once said, “The world has yet to see what God can do with a man fully consecrated to Him.” Moody sought to be that man—and God used him to bring thousands into the kingdom.
