A Shelter In The Time Of Storm
By Vernon J. Charlesworth
Lyrics
A shelter in the time of storm;
Secure whatever ill betide,
A shelter in the time of storm.
Refrain:
Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A weary land, a weary land;
Oh, Jesus is a Rock in a weary land,
A shelter in the time of storm.
2 A shade by day, defense by night,
A shelter in the time of storm;
No fears alarm, no foes affright,
A shelter in the time of storm.
3 The raging storms may round us beat,
A shelter in the time of storm;
We'll never leave our safe retreat,
A shelter in the time of storm.
4 O Rock divine, O Refuge dear,
A shelter in the time of storm;
Be Thou our helper ever near,
A shelter in the time of storm.

About This Hymn
A Shelter in the Time of Storm was written by Vernon J. Charlesworth, a British pastor and schoolmaster, around 1880. The hymn is firmly rooted in biblical imagery of Christ as the Rock and refuge for His people in seasons of trial and danger. The title itself draws attention to one of the most comforting descriptions of God in Scripture: the One who provides safety and covering when the storms of life rage fiercest.
The text became more widely known when Ira D. Sankey, the well-known evangelist and song leader associated with Dwight L. Moody, discovered the hymn and set it to music. Sankey composed a tune that was simple, strong, and easily sung by congregations, which helped the hymn spread rapidly during revival services. The combination of Charlesworth’s lyrics and Sankey’s melody made the hymn especially dear to those who were experiencing hardship, whether through poverty, persecution, or personal sorrow. The refrain, “Jesus is a rock in a weary land, a shelter in the time of storm,” echoed the heart of many believers who needed encouragement to persevere.
The hymn is built around the metaphor of Christ as a Rock. Each stanza describes a different way He provides safety: as a refuge in trials, a defense against enemies, a source of comfort in fear, and a final protection when life draws to its close. The hymn has stood the test of time because it balances realism about the struggles of earthly life with unwavering confidence in Christ’s power to sustain His children. For more than a century, congregations have drawn strength from its assurance that, no matter what storms may come, Jesus is a shelter, strong, secure, and sufficient.
