She began contributing poems to newspapers by age fifteen and later became a regular hymn writer for the Fillmore Brothers publishing company. Her ability to express deep spiritual truths in simple, heartfelt language made her a favorite among churches and Sunday schools.

This hymn was set to music by Daniel B. Towner, a gifted composer who worked closely with evangelist D. L. Moody and composed many well-known gospel tunes.
