Beautiful For Spacious Skies
By Katharine Lee Bates
Lyrics
for amber waves of grain;
for purple mountain majesties
above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee,
and crown thy good with brotherhood
from sea to shining sea.
in liberating strife,
who more than self their country loved,
and mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine,
till all success be nobleness,
and every gain divine.
that sees beyond the years
thine alabaster cities gleam,
undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God mend thine every flaw,
confirm thy soul in self-control,
thy liberty in law.

About This Hymn
“Beautiful for Spacious Skies,” more commonly known as “America the Beautiful,” is a patriotic hymn written by Katharine Lee Bates, an American poet, educator, and social activist. The hymn’s origins trace back to the summer of 1893 when Bates, a professor at Wellesley College, traveled to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to teach a summer class. During this trip, she took a journey to the summit of Pikes Peak. Inspired by the breathtaking view of the Rockies, wide plains, and fertile fields stretching endlessly before her, she penned the initial verses of this hymn. Originally published as a poem in The Congregationalist in 1895, it was later set to music by Samuel A. Ward, whose tune “Materna” gave the hymn its majestic and enduring melody. Over time, this hymn became one of the most beloved patriotic songs in the United States, often sung alongside the national anthem.
The hymn reflects Bates’s deep appreciation of the natural beauty of the American landscape as well as her strong Christian faith, which shaped her vision of a morally upright and spiritually grounded nation. Each stanza offers a combination of praise and prayer, celebrating God’s blessings upon the land while also imploring divine guidance and character for its people. Bates’s words call for a nation crowned with brotherhood, self-control, and righteousness, demonstrating that patriotism is inseparable from moral responsibility. This message, rooted in biblical principles, gives the hymn a timeless quality and makes it more than just a song of national pride; it is also a prayer for God’s continued guidance over America’s future.
“America the Beautiful” quickly grew in popularity, finding a place in churches, schools, and civic ceremonies across the nation. It has been performed at major national events, public gatherings, and even presidential inaugurations, symbolizing the shared values of unity, gratitude, and faith in God. The hymn’s soaring melody and poetic language make it a beloved staple of American hymnody. Bates, who spent much of her life advocating for education, women’s rights, and peace, intended her words to inspire Americans to live lives of virtue and service, mirroring the natural splendor of their land. Today, the hymn remains a heartfelt expression of national thanksgiving and a reminder that true greatness comes not from power or wealth, but from moral and spiritual integrity under God.
