About This Hymn

Note: The song is sung on these instructions:
Divide the group into four sections. Each section Sings the first phrase, sustaining the word "comes" until the four parts swell to a climax.

“Behold, He Comes!” is a mid-twentieth century hymn written by Eleanor S. Murray in 1956. The text reflects a strong emphasis on the Second Coming of Christ and the hope of His visible return in glory. It belongs to that stream of hymnody that calls the church to watchfulness, expectancy, and joyful anticipation of the Lord’s appearing.

The hymn draws heavily from Revelation 1:7, which proclaims that Christ will come with clouds and every eye shall see Him. The language of triumph and manifestation echoes Matthew 24:30-31, where the Son of Man appears in power and great glory. The tone is not fearful but celebratory, presenting the return of Christ as the fulfillment of divine promise.

A central theme is resurrection hope and final gathering. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 describes the Lord descending from heaven with a shout and believers being caught up to meet Him. The hymn reflects this assurance, directing the church to look forward with confidence rather than dread. The anticipated return of Christ is portrayed as the consummation of redemption.

Another emphasis is the universal acknowledgment of Christ’s lordship. Philippians 2:9-11 declares that every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. The hymn affirms that His coming will reveal His rightful authority before all creation.

“Behold, He Comes!” is well suited for Advent, eschatological themes, or services focused on Christian hope. Its scriptural grounding and forward-looking faith encourage believers to remain steadfast, knowing that history moves toward the visible and glorious return of their King.
