Blessed Jesus, at Thy word
By Catherine Winkworth
Lyrics
we are gathered all to hear you.
Let our hearts and souls be stirred
now to seek and love and fear you.
By your gospel pure and holy,
teach us, Lord, to love you solely.
lie in deepest darkness shrouded,
till your Spirit breaks our night
with your beams of truth unclouded.
You alone to God can win us;
you must work all good within us.
Light of Light, from God proceeding,
open lips and ears and heart;
help us by your Spirit's leading.
Hear the cry your church now raises;
Lord, accept our prayers and praises.

About This Hymn
“Blessed Jesus, at Thy Word” is one of the finest classic German hymns brought into English by Catherine Winkworth, whose translations introduced many great Lutheran hymns to the English speaking world. The original text was written in 1663 by Tobias Clausnitzer, a Lutheran pastor who served during the period of rebuilding that followed the devastation of the Thirty Years War. Winkworth translated the hymn in 1858, preserving the reverent tone and rich theological depth that mark the German original.
This hymn is a prayer for illumination and a model of humble approach to Scripture. It begins with an earnest plea that Christ Himself would open the hearts and minds of His people as they gather to hear His Word. The worshipper acknowledges that human efforts, without the Spirit’s help, cannot grasp divine truth. With roots in Psalm 119, which asks God to open the understanding, and in Luke 24, where the risen Christ opened the disciples’ minds to understand the Scriptures, the hymn invites believers into the same posture of dependence and expectation.
The middle portions of the hymn focus on the transforming power of God’s Word. The text speaks of hearts being softened, minds being renewed, and believers being drawn into unity and holiness through the truth. This reflects the prayer of Jesus in John 17, where He asked the Father to sanctify His people through the Word, which is truth. The hymn expresses a deep trust that Christ continues to teach His church through the Scriptures, guiding them into faithful obedience and steadfast love.
Musically, it is most often sung to the tune LIEBSTER JESU, a gentle and contemplative melody that matches the humble and prayerful character of the text. The tune invites the congregation to quiet their hearts and listen attentively, making this hymn especially suited for the beginning of worship, the reading of Scripture, or moments devoted to spiritual reflection and learning.
“Blessed Jesus, at Thy Word” remains beloved across many traditions because it captures the heart of Christian worship, which is the desire to be taught, corrected, and strengthened by the living Word of God. Its prayerful spirit continues to prepare congregations to receive truth with reverence and joy, making it a timeless treasure within the life of the church.
