Breathe on me, Breath of God
By Edwin Hatch
Lyrics
fill me with life anew,
that I may love the way you love,
and do what you would do.
until my heart is pure,
until my will is one with yours,
to do and to endure.
so shall I never die,
but live with you the perfect life
for all eternity.

About This Hymn
“Breathe on Me, Breath of God” is a meditative and prayerful hymn that seeks spiritual renewal through the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit. Written in 1878 by Edwin Hatch, an Anglican theologian and professor at Oxford, the hymn reflects Hatch’s deep desire for a life fully yielded to God. It expresses a longing not only for cleansing from sin but for transformation, communion, and eternal union with God. The first stanza, inspired by John 20:22, where Christ breathes on His disciples, asks God to fill the soul with His Spirit so that one may live according to His will.
The remaining stanzas build on this foundation. The second verse petitions that God’s will might be the worshiper’s own, emphasizing obedience and unity with God’s desires. The third verse goes further, seeking a love so pure and divine that it would consume self-interest and align the believer completely with God. The final stanza anticipates eternal life, where the soul, perfected and empowered by God’s breath, shall live forever in the light of His glory.
The text is often paired with the tune “Trentham,” composed by Robert Jackson in 1888, and its gentle, reverent melody reinforces the tone of spiritual yearning. The hymn has found its place in various traditions and is especially fitting during Pentecost, times of consecration, or any service focused on renewal, sanctification, or the presence of the Holy Spirit. Over the years, its simplicity and depth have allowed it to resonate widely, inviting believers to surrender to the transforming work of God in their hearts.
