Brethren, We Have Met to Worship
By George Askins
Lyrics
And adore the Lord our God;
Will you pray with all your power,
While we try to preach the Word?
All is vain unless the Spirit
Of the Holy One comes down;
Brethren, pray, and holy manna
Will be showered all around.
Slumb'ring on the brink of woe;
Death is coming, hell is moving,
Can you bear to let them go?
See our fathers and our mothers,
And our children sinking down;
Brethren, pray and holy manna
Will be showered all around.
Moses' sister aided him;
Will you help the trembling mourners
Who are struggling hard with sin?
Tell them all about the Savior,
Tell them that He will be found;
Sisters, pray, and holy manna
Will be showered all around.
Let us love each other, too;
Let us love and pray for sinners,
Till our God makes all things new.
Then He'll call us home to heaven,
At His table we'll sit down;
Christ will gird Himself, and serve us
With sweet manna all around.

About This Hymn
“Brethren, We Have Met to Worship” is one of the earliest and most enduring American worship hymns, written by George Askins during the early years of the nineteenth century. It reflects the spirit of revival that shaped much of early American Christianity, especially within camp meetings and frontier gatherings. The hymn invites believers to approach the Lord with unity of heart, sincere devotion, and an expectation of His presence among His people.
The opening call sets the tone for the entire hymn. The singers gather not for formality or tradition alone, but to meet the living God who listens, forgives, and strengthens His people. The hymn encourages a spirit of brotherly love, reminding the congregation that worship is both vertical toward God and horizontal toward one another. This focus on fellowship reflects the teaching of Hebrews 10:24 to encourage one another to love and good works.
A central theme of the hymn is earnest prayer. Askins urges believers to seek the outpouring of God’s Spirit, recognizing
