Christ Is All
By William A. Williams
Lyrics
For age and penury were there,
Yet peace and joy withal;
I asked the lonely mother whence
Her helpless widowhood’s defense,
She told me, "Christ was all."
Christ is all, all in all,
Yes, Christ is all in all;
Christ is all, all in all,
Yes, Christ is all in all.
Where lay a child with aching head,
Waiting for Jesus' call;
I marked his smile, 'twas sweet as May,
And as his spirit passed away,
He whispered, "Christ is all."
The flames could not his courage shake
Nor death his soul appal,
I asked him whence his strength was given,
He look triumphantly to heaven,
And answered, "Christ is all."
To Afric's sand and Greenland's snow,
To save from Satan's thrall,
Nor home, nor life he counted dear,
'Midst wants and perils owned no fear,
He felt that "Christ was all."
And earth and sea resigned their dead,
A fire dissolved this ball:
I saw the Church’s glorious throng;
I heard the burden of their song,—
'Twas Christ is all in all!
The Father, Son, and Spirit say;
The Bride repeats the call,
For he will cleanse your guilty stains,
His love will soothe your weary pains,
For "Christ is all in all."

About This Hymn
“Christ Is All,” written by William A. Williams in 1903, is a powerful hymn that celebrates the sufficiency and supremacy of Jesus Christ in the believer’s life. Rooted in the truth of Colossians 3:11, the hymn declares that Christ is everything to the soul who trusts in Him. It captures the essence of Christian devotion by focusing entirely on the person of Jesus, His saving grace, His sustaining presence, and His eternal glory.
From the opening lines, the hymn communicates a tone of deep gratitude and personal testimony. It is not merely a doctrinal statement but a heartfelt declaration from one who has found in Christ all that life and eternity require. Each stanza unfolds with growing conviction, expressing how the Lord meets every need, comforts every sorrow, and fills every longing heart with joy.
The message of “Christ Is All” reflects the simplicity and power of true Christian experience. Williams portrays the believer’s journey as one of increasing dependence upon Christ, who is the source of all strength and peace. The hymn reminds the singer that earthly wealth, fame, and pleasure fade away, but Christ remains constant, sufficient, and satisfying. The refrain, repeating the central phrase “Christ is all, yes, all in all,” becomes a joyful anthem of spiritual assurance.
Musically and lyrically, the hymn has a devotional quality that makes it both intimate and congregational. It has been sung in revivals, prayer meetings, and personal worship, often as a reminder that faith is not about religion or ritual but about a living relationship with the Lord Jesus. This emphasis on Christ-centered life echoes Paul’s words in Philippians 3:8, where he counts all things as loss compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ.
The hymn also serves as a quiet call to humility and trust. It teaches that the believer’s sufficiency is found not in self but in the Savior. Whether in joy or trial, health or weakness, the Christian can rest in the truth that Christ is enough. This simplicity of faith has given the hymn its lasting power, as generations continue to sing its message of total dependence upon the Redeemer.
William A. Williams, though not as widely known as some of his contemporaries, left a legacy through this hymn that continues to uplift hearts. “Christ Is All” stands as a timeless reminder that Jesus alone is the foundation and fulfillment of our hope. In every season of life, the believer can echo the words of this hymn with confidence: “Christ is all, yes, all in all.”
