About This Hymn

The response of the congregation in the General Intercessions is an ancient and enduring practice of the Christian Church. When the deacon, priest, or leader presents petitions before God, the people answer in unison, affirming their unity of faith and dependence upon the Lord’s mercy. Common responses include “Lord, hear our prayer,” “Lord, have mercy,” and “Graciously hear us.” Each phrase is rooted in Scripture and reflects the posture of believers who seek God’s help with humility and confidence.

The simplicity of these words allows the whole assembly to participate fully in intercession, making the prayer of the Church not only the voice of the minister but the united voice of the faithful. This practice draws on the exhortation of Paul, who urged Christians to offer “supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks… for all men” (1 Timothy 2:1). By repeating these brief refrains, the Church lifts up prayers for the world, for the Church, for those in authority, for the suffering, and for the departed.

Through these responses, the congregation expresses faith that God hears and answers prayer. Just as the early Church “continued steadfastly… in prayers” (Acts 2:42), so the modern Church joins her voice in these short invocations. They serve as both confession and hope: confession that we are needy before God, and hope that He who is gracious and merciful will hear us for Christ’s sake.

The General Intercessions (sometimes called the Prayers of the Faithful) are a regular part of Christian liturgy, especially in Catholic, Anglican, and some Protestant worship services. They come after the reading of Scripture and the homily, and they give the congregation a chance to respond to God’s Word with prayer for the needs of the Church and the world.

Here is a clear outline:

What They Are:
General Intercessions are communal prayers where the congregation asks God’s mercy and blessing for the Church, the world, the poor, the suffering, and all people. They are “general” because they are not just for the individual but for the whole Body of Christ and the wider human family.

Biblical Roots:
Scripture encourages such intercessory prayer:

  • “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.” (1 Timothy 2:1–2, KJV)

  • “Pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” (James 5:16, KJV)

Typical Structure:

  1. For the Church: prayers for unity, holiness, leaders, and the spread of the Gospel.

  2. For the World: prayers for governments, peace among nations, and justice.

  3. For the Suffering: prayers for the poor, the sick, the oppressed, and the marginalized.

  4. For the Local Community: prayers for families, workers, schools, and those in special need.

  5. For the Faithful Departed: prayers for those who have died in the Lord.

Example of General Intercessions:

  • For the holy Church of God throughout the world, that she may proclaim the Gospel with boldness, let us pray to the Lord.

  • For leaders of nations, that they may govern with justice and seek peace, let us pray to the Lord.

  • For the poor, the sick, and the suffering, that they may find comfort and hope in Christ, let us pray to the Lord.

  • For our families, neighbors, and community, that God may guide us in love, let us pray to the Lord.

  • For those who have departed this life in faith, that they may rest in the light of Christ’s presence, let us pray to the Lord.
