God Moves in a Mysterious Way
By William Cowper
Lyrics
His wonders to perform.
He plants his footsteps in the sea
And rides upon the storm.
Deep in the dark and hidden mines,
With never-failing skill,
He fashions all his bright designs
And works his sov'reign will.
So God we trust in you.
O God, we trust in you.
When tears are great and comforts few,
We hope in mercies ever new,
We trust in you.
The clouds that you now dread
Are big with mercy and will break
In blessings on your head.
Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust him for his grace.
Behind a frowning providence,
He hides a smiling face.
Unfolding every hour.
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.
Blind unbelief is sure to err
And scan his work in vain.
God is his own interpreter,
And he will make it plain.

About This Hymn
Words: William Cowper (1731–1800)
Tune: Various (commonly Dundee or London New)
Year: 1774 (text)
God Moves in a Mysterious Way is a deeply reflective hymn written by William Cowper, one of the most sensitive and spiritually insightful poets of the 18th century. Born in England in 1731, Cowper (pronounced "Cooper") struggled for much of his life with severe depression and mental illness. Yet through his friendship with fellow hymn writer John Newton (author of Amazing Grace), Cowper found comfort in the gospel and helped shape the English evangelical hymn tradition.
This hymn was written in 1773, during one of Cowper’s darkest periods, reportedly just before he experienced a serious breakdown. Despite his anguish, the text expresses unwavering trust in God’s providence and sovereignty. The line “God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform” has become a well-known expression of quiet faith in the face of confusion or trial.
First published in 1774 in Olney Hymns, a collection Cowper co-authored with Newton, the hymn reflects themes of divine wisdom, hidden mercy, and hope beyond human understanding. It continues to encourage believers that, even when God’s ways seem incomprehensible, His purposes are always wise and loving.
