God of Grace and God of Glory
Lyrics
on Thy people pour Thy pow'r;
crown Thine ancient church's story,
bring her bud to glorious flow'r.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
for the facing of this hour,
for the facing of this hour.
scorn Thy Christ, assail His ways!
Fears and doubts too long have bound us,
free our hearts to faith and praise.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
for the living of these days,
for the living of these days.
gird our lives, that they may be
armored with all Christ-like graces
in the fight to set men free.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
that we fail not man nor Thee!
That we fail not man nor Thee!

About This Hymn
God of Grace and God of Glory is a powerful prayer-hymn that calls the Church to spiritual awakening, courage, and faithfulness in a challenging world. Written for a church dedication service, the hymn looks beyond buildings and institutions to the deeper need for God’s transforming power in His people. Fosdick pleads for divine wisdom, purity of heart, and moral strength, asking God to rescue believers from fear, pride, and complacency. The hymn confronts false confidence, shallow faith, and reliance on human strength, while urging the Church to stand boldly for truth, justice, and Christlike love. It is both penitential and aspirational, making it especially fitting for services focused on renewal, mission, reformation, and commitment to Christ’s lordship.
