Great Our Joy as Now We Gather

By Fred Pratt Green

Lyrics

1. Great our joy as now we gather
Where the Master makes us one:
Where we worship God the Father
Thro’ the Spirit of His Son.
All who search for His church
Find it where His will is done.
2. Precious is the tie that binds us
To our God when faith grows cold;
Precious all that now reminds us
He is still our safe stronghold.
Faithful love serves to prove
Here the Shepherd has His fold.
3. May we learn from Christ’s example
How to use this house of prayer:
He who loved and cleansed His temple
Wants us all to worship there.
God the Son shuts out none:
In His kingdom all may share.
4. Lord, inspire us with Your vision
Of a world which must be won!
Glorious is the church’s mission,
Long endeavoured, scarce begun!
Faithful now – this is how
God’s eternal will is done

About This Hymn

“Great Our Joy as Now We Gather” is a hymn of communal thanksgiving written by Fred Pratt Green in 1972. The text reflects Green’s conviction that worship is both a joyful privilege and a formative act for the life of the church. Designed for congregational use, the hymn celebrates the shared joy of God’s people as they come together in His presence.

The hymn emphasizes joy rooted in fellowship with God and with one another. Gathering for worship is presented not as routine or obligation, but as a gracious opportunity to encounter God and be renewed in faith. This communal joy echoes the biblical delight expressed in the psalms, where God’s people rejoice to enter His house together.

A key theme of the hymn is God’s active presence in worship. Green affirms that Christ is present when believers gather in His name, guiding, teaching, and strengthening them. Worship is thus portrayed as a living encounter rather than a formal exercise. This perspective encourages attentiveness and expectancy within the gathered community.

The hymn also highlights the outward movement of worship. Joy experienced in God’s presence leads naturally to service, witness, and love in daily life. Green often emphasized that worship equips believers for faithful living in the world, and this hymn reflects that conviction by linking praise with obedience and mission.

“Great Our Joy as Now We Gather” is well suited for opening worship services, celebrations of Christian fellowship, and special occasions that emphasize unity and gratitude. Its enduring appeal lies in its clear biblical foundation and its warm invitation to rejoice together in the presence of God.
