His Eye Is on the Sparrow
By Civilla D. Martin
Lyrics
Why should the shadows come?
Why should my heart be lonely
And long for heav’n and home,
When Jesus is my portion?
My constant Friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.
I sing because I’m happy—
I sing because I’m free—
For His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.
His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness,
I lose my doubt and fear.
Though by the path He leadeth,
But one step I may see:
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me..
Whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing,
When hope within me dies,I draw the closer to Him;
From care He sets me free:
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.

About This Hymn
“His Eye Is on the Sparrow” is a gospel hymn that continues to offer deep reassurance to countless believers. Written in 1905 by Civilla Durfee Martin and set to music by the prolific composer Charles H. Gabriel, the hymn is rooted in the comforting truth that God watches over every creature, especially His children. The inspiration for the hymn comes directly from Jesus’ words in Matthew, where He assures His followers that if God cares for the tiny sparrows, how much more does He care for them.
The origin of the hymn is tied to a visit that Civilla Martin and her husband paid to an invalid Christian woman named Mrs. Doolittle. Despite being bedridden for twenty years, she lived with remarkable peace and joy. When asked about the secret to her serenity, she replied, “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.” These simple, faith-filled words stayed with Civilla Martin, and later inspired her to write the hymn that has become a cornerstone of Christian encouragement.
The lyrics begin with a question: “Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come?” These questions reflect the natural emotional struggles believers face. But the answer is immediate and sure—because Jesus is our portion and His eye is on the sparrow, we have no reason to be discouraged. The chorus beautifully echoes this: “I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free, for His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.”
Charles Gabriel’s melody is gentle, warm, and emotionally resonant, perfectly capturing the comfort and peace expressed in the lyrics. It invites reflection and worship, drawing the singer and listener into the assurance of God's tender care.
Over the decades, “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” has been recorded by numerous artists and featured in many spiritual gatherings. Its lasting popularity is due in part to its simple yet profound message: God is intimately aware of every detail of our lives. Even in seasons of trial, grief, or loneliness, He is present and attentive.
This hymn speaks deeply to those suffering in silence or enduring long seasons of hardship. It tells them they are not forgotten. It reminds every believer that their life is precious in God’s sight and that His watchful care extends to even the smallest and most fragile among us. In a world where people often feel overlooked or insignificant, “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” offers a timeless reminder of God’s personal and sustaining love.
