Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!
By Reginald Heber
Lyrics
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea.
Cherubim and seraphim, falling down before thee,
Who was and is and evermore shall be.
Though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see,
Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
Perfect in pow'r, in love, and purity.
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three Persons, blessed Trinity.

About This Hymn
"Holy, Holy, Holy" is one of the most enduring hymns of the Christian faith, celebrating the majesty and mystery of the Trinity. The text was written by Reginald Heber, an Anglican bishop of Calcutta, India, who sought to provide hymns for each Sunday of the church year. This hymn was specifically intended for Trinity Sunday, and it exalts God in His threefold nature—Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Heber, a devout scholar and poet, based the lyrics on the vision of God's throne room found in Revelation 4, where celestial beings continually praise God's holiness. The repeated “holy” mirrors the biblical triple repetition used to emphasize the absolute purity and majesty of God.
Years after Heber’s untimely death at age 42, composer John B. Dykes wrote the tune NICAEA—named after the Council of Nicaea (AD 325), which affirmed the doctrine of the Trinity. His rich, reverent melody matched Heber’s text perfectly, and the hymn was first published in 1861 in Hymns Ancient and Modern.
Since then, "Holy, Holy, Holy" has become a staple in Christian worship worldwide. Its stately reverence makes it especially fitting for traditional liturgy, communion services, and moments of deep praise.
