How Far From Home?
Lyrics
I bent my steps—the watchman spake:
“The long, dark night is almost gone,
The morning soon will break.
Then weep no more, but speed thy flight,
With Hope’s bright star thy guiding ray,
Till thou shalt reach the realms of light,
In everlasting day.”
This was his soul-inspiring song:
“With courage bold, the sword I’ll wield,
The battle is not long.
Then weep no more, but well endure
The conflict, till thy work is done;
For this we know, the prize is sure,
When victory is won.”
Seemed, with one voice, to make reply:
“Time’s wasting sands are nearly run,
Eternity is nigh.
Then weep no more—with warning tones,
Portentous sights are thick’ning round,
The whole creation, waiting, groans,
To hear the trumpet sound.”
The trav’ler’s lonely heart to cheer;
Which oft a healing balm has brought,
And dried the mourner’s tear.
Then weep no more, since we shall meet
Where weary footsteps never roam—
Our trials past, our joys complete,
Safe in our Father’s home.

About This Hymn
“How Far From Home?” is a devotional hymn written by Annie Rebekah Smith and is commonly dated to 1852, during a period of strong emphasis on Christian pilgrimage and expectation of the heavenly homeland. The hymn reflects the biblical theme that believers are strangers and pilgrims on the earth, journeying toward a better country prepared by God.
The hymn presents the Christian life as a journey marked by longing, endurance, and hope. By asking how far remains before reaching home, the text expresses both weariness with the present world and anticipation of eternal rest. This imagery aligns closely with Scripture’s portrayal of God’s people as sojourners whose true citizenship is in heaven.
A central focus of the hymn is perseverance in faith. The question posed in the title is not one of despair, but of hopeful expectation. The hymn encourages believers to press forward, trusting God’s promises and remembering that present trials are temporary when viewed in light of eternal glory.
The text also emphasizes assurance. Though the distance may feel great, the destination is certain. Christ’s promise to prepare a place for His people undergirds the hymn’s message, offering comfort and motivation to remain faithful.
“How Far From Home?” remains meaningful for worship settings that emphasize pilgrimage, endurance, and the hope of heaven. Its simple language, strong scriptural foundation, and clear focus on eternal home continue to resonate with believers seeking encouragement on their journey of faith.
