I sought the Lord
By Jean Ingelow
Lyrics
He moved my soul to seek Him, seeking me;
it was not I that found, O Savior true;
no, I was found of Thee.
I walked and sank not on the storm-vexed sea;
'twas not so much that I on Thee took hold,
as Thou, dear Lord, on me.
of love is but my answer, Lord, to Thee!
For Thou wert long beforehand with my soul,
always Thou lovedst me.

About This Hymn
“I Sought the Lord, and Afterward I Knew” is a reflective devotional hymn written by the English poet Jean Ingelow during the nineteenth century. The hymn expresses a profound theological truth about the grace of God in salvation. It teaches that while a person may feel that he is seeking God, the deeper reality is that God first sought and drew the sinner to Himself. This truth echoes the teaching of Scripture that salvation begins with the initiative of God.
The opening stanza describes a believer who thought he had begun the search for God, only to realize later that God had already been working in his heart. The words reflect the teaching of John 6:44, where Jesus declares that no man can come to Him unless the Father draws him. Ingelow’s hymn poetically captures the experience of many believers who later recognize that their desire to seek God was itself the result of divine grace working within them.
The second stanza continues this theme by portraying the believer as one who seemed to grasp Christ, yet discovers that Christ was actually the One who first held him. The imagery of walking upon stormy waters recalls the biblical story of Peter stepping onto the sea toward Christ. The hymn suggests that the believer’s security does not rest in his own strength or grip upon the Savior, but in Christ’s firm hold upon him. This reflects the comforting truth that the Lord sustains those who trust in Him.
The final stanza develops the theme of responsive love. The believer now walks with God, loves Him, and follows Him, yet recognizes that this love is only a response to God’s prior love. This idea directly reflects the statement of 1 John 4:19: “We love him, because he first loved us.” The hymn therefore highlights the priority of divine grace in the entire Christian life. From the first awakening of the soul to the continuing walk of faith, God’s love precedes and enables the believer’s response.
Another biblical truth reflected in the hymn is found in Luke 19:10, where Christ declares that the Son of man came to seek and to save that which was lost. Ingelow’s words beautifully capture this gospel reality. The believer does not discover Christ by his own wisdom or effort. Rather, Christ comes seeking the sinner, drawing the heart, and awakening faith.
Because of its rich theological insight and devotional tone, this hymn has been valued in many Christian traditions. It invites believers to reflect on the mystery of grace and to respond with gratitude and humility. The hymn reminds the church that the entire story of salvation begins with God’s love, continues by His sustaining power, and ends with His faithful keeping of the souls that He has found.
