I to the hills will lift mine eyes

By Scottish Psalter

Lyrics

1. I to the hills will lift mine eyes,
from whence doth come mine aid.
2 My safety cometh from the Lord,
who heav'n and earth hath made.
3 Thy foot he'll not let slide, nor will
he slumber that thee keeps.
4 Behold, he that keeps Israel,
he slumbers not, nor sleeps.
5. The Lord thee keeps, the Lord thy shade
on thy right hand doth stay:
6 The moon by night thee shall not smite,
nor yet the sun by day.
7 The Lord shall keep thy soul; he shall
preserve thee from all ill.
8 Henceforth thy going out and in
God keep for ever will.

Psalm 121:1–8; Psalm 46:1; Psalm 125:2

About This Hymn

“I to the Hills Will Lift Mine Eyes” is a metrical rendering of Psalm 121 from the Scottish Psalter of 1650. As part of the Reformed tradition of psalm singing, this hymn is a faithful paraphrase of Scripture, designed for congregational worship. It reflects the biblical practice of singing the Psalms, allowing worshipers to express God’s Word directly in song.

The hymn begins with the psalmist lifting his eyes to the hills, a gesture that signifies looking beyond earthly circumstances to God for help. Psalm 121:1–2 declares that true help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. This establishes the central message of the hymn, that God alone is the source of protection, strength, and security for His people.

A key theme throughout the psalm is God’s constant watchfulness. The hymn echoes the assurance that the Lord neither slumbers nor sleeps, emphasizing His continual care. This truth aligns with Psalm 46:1, which describes God as a present help in trouble. Believers are reminded that God’s protection is not occasional but unceasing.

The imagery of God as a keeper or guardian is also prominent. Psalm 121 repeatedly affirms that the Lord preserves His people from harm, both now and forevermore. This is reinforced by Psalm 125:2, which compares God’s surrounding presence to mountains encircling Jerusalem, symbolizing security and stability.

“I to the Hills Will Lift Mine Eyes” remains a powerful expression of trust in God’s providence. It encourages believers to depend fully on the Lord in every circumstance, confident that He watches over their lives with perfect care. Through its scriptural foundation, the hymn continues to strengthen faith and direct hearts toward the unfailing help of God.
