I Would Be True, For There Are Those Who Trust Me
By H. A. Walter
Lyrics
I would be pure, for there are those who care;
I would be strong, for there is much to suffer;
I would be brave, for there is much to dare,
I would be brave, for there is much to dare.
I would be giving, and forget the gift;
I would be humble, for I know my weakness;
I would look up, and laugh and love and lift,
I would look up, and laugh and love and lift.

About This Hymn
“I Would Be True” is a hymn written by Howard Arnold Walter, an American missionary and teacher who tragically died at a young age while serving in Lahore, India. Walter wrote the poem in 1906 while he was a student at Princeton University, intending it as a personal declaration of the kind of man he desired to be. The text was later set to music and became a hymn of character, integrity, and faithfulness. Its tone is devotional and reflective, with each stanza beginning with the phrase “I would be,” emphasizing personal responsibility before God and others.
The hymn emphasizes the importance of living a life consistent with Christian witness. It highlights values such as truth, purity, courage, and service, all of which align with Philippians 1:27, where Paul exhorts believers to live lives that reflect the gospel. Walter’s words remind Christians that their lives are observed by others, and their testimony can either strengthen or weaken the faith of those who look to them. The repeated affirmations express a deep resolve to live out faith with integrity, knowing that others rely on the example of committed believers.
Though Walter died of influenza at only 35 years old, his hymn endures as a testimony to his vision of Christian faithfulness. “I Would Be True” has been included in many hymnals throughout the twentieth century and is often used in settings that encourage moral living and spiritual resolve, such as youth gatherings, missionary services, and church worship. Its simplicity and sincerity make it a timeless piece that continues to inspire believers to live in such a way that their lives reflect Christ and strengthen those around them.
