Jesus! the Name High over All
Lyrics
in hell or earth or sky;
angels and mortals prostrate fall,
and devils fear and fly.
Jesus, the Name to sinners dear,
the Name to sinners giv'n;
it scatters all their guilty fear,
it turns their hell to heav'n.
the riches of His grace!
The arms of love that compass me
would all the world embrace.
Thee I shall constantly proclaim,
tho' earth and hell oppose;
bold to confess Thy glorious Name
before a world of foes.
His saving truth proclaim;
'tis all my business here below
to cry, "Behold the Lamb!"
Happy, if with my latest breath
I may but gasp His Name,
preach Him to all, and cry in death,
"Behold, behold the Lamb!"

About This Hymn
“Jesus! The Name High over All” is a hymn written by Charles Wesley in 1740. It is a hymn of praise that exalts the name of Jesus Christ as the highest and most powerful name in heaven and on earth. Wesley wrote the hymn during the early years of the Methodist revival in England, a time when he produced many hymns intended to teach Christian doctrine and inspire heartfelt worship among believers.
The hymn reflects the biblical teaching found in Philippians 2:9-11, where God highly exalts Jesus and gives Him the name above every name so that every knee should bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Wesley’s hymn celebrates this exaltation and calls believers to honor and proclaim the name of Christ with joy and reverence.
Another important theme of the hymn is the saving power of Jesus’ name. Acts 4:12 declares that salvation is found in no one else and that there is no other name under heaven given among people by which we must be saved. Wesley emphasizes that the name of Jesus brings forgiveness, hope, and spiritual life to those who trust in Him.
The hymn also reflects the teaching of Hebrews 1:4, which describes Christ as having a name more excellent than the angels. In the hymn, Jesus’ name is portrayed as worthy of the highest praise because of His divine authority and His work of redemption. Through His death and resurrection, Christ has conquered sin and opened the way of salvation.
Finally, the hymn anticipates the universal recognition of Christ’s rule described in Revelation 19:12 and throughout the New Testament, where Jesus is revealed as the victorious King. By lifting up His name, believers join the worship of heaven and proclaim His glory to the world.
Because of its strong emphasis on the glory and power of Christ’s name, “Jesus! The Name High over All” has been included in many English hymnals. It continues to be sung in churches as a hymn of joyful praise, reminding believers that the name of Jesus is worthy of honor, faith, and devotion.
