Jesus Thou Art Standing
By William Walsham How
Lyrics
outside the fast-closed door,
in lowly patience waiting
to pass the threshold o'er:
shame on us, Christian brethren,
his name and sign who bear,
oh shame, thrice shame upon us
to keep him standing there!
and lo! That hand is scarred,
and thorns thy brow encircle,
and tears thy face have marred:
O love that passeth knowledge,
so patiently to wait!
O sin that hath no equal
so fast to bar the gate!
in accents meek and low,
'I died for you, my children,
and will ye treat me so?'
O Lord, with shame and sorrow
we open now the door:
dear Saviour, enter, enter,
and leave us never more!

About This Hymn
“O Jesus, Thou Art Standing” was written by William Walsham How, an English bishop and prolific hymn writer known for his pastoral heart and devotion to encouraging the Christian life. Written in 1864, this hymn beautifully captures the tender image of Christ standing at the door of the sinner’s heart, patiently knocking and waiting for an invitation to enter.
The hymn reflects a deep longing for souls to respond to Christ’s call and experience His forgiving love. Each stanza vividly depicts Jesus’ loving presence and the believer’s choice to open or close the heart’s door. How’s words encourage reflection on the personal relationship between the Savior and the individual, highlighting the accessibility of Christ’s grace.
Set to various melodies over time, the hymn’s gentle and earnest tone has made it a favorite in both congregational worship and personal devotion.
