About This Hymn
"Just a Closer Walk with Thee" is a traditional gospel song and jazz standard widely performed both vocally and instrumentally. It is especially prominent in New Orleans jazz funerals, often played during the hymn and dirge section. The lyrics draw inspiration from biblical passages such as 2 Corinthians 5:7 and James 4:8.
While the song's exact origins are uncertain, it likely emerged from African-American churches in the 19th century, possibly even among enslaved people who sang spirituals while working. However, gospel composer Kenneth Morris is credited with popularizing the version known today. In 1940, after hearing the song sung by a train station porter, Morris transcribed and published it, adding lyrics of his own. Within a few years, it became a staple in gospel music, later embraced by jazz and American folk traditions.
