Lord, the God of My Salvation

By The New Metrical Version of the Psalms

Lyrics

1. LORD, the God of my salvation,
day and night I cry to Thee;
let my prayer now find acceptance,
in Thy mercy answer me.
Full of troubles and affliction,
nigh to death my soul is brought
helpless, like one cast forever
from Thy care and from Thy thought.
2. Thou hast brought me down to darkness,
'neath Thy wrath I am oppressed;
all the billows of affliction
overwhelm my soul distressed.
Thou hast made my friends despise me,
and companionless I go,
bound, and helpless in my bondage,
pining in my bitter woe.
3. Unto Thee with hands uplifted
daily I direct my cry;
hear, O LORD, my supplication,
hear and save me ere I die.
Wilt Thou wait to show Thy wonders
and Thy mercy to the dead?
Let me live to tell Thy praises,
by Thy lovingkindness led.

About This Hymn

“Lord, the God of My Salvation” is a metrical paraphrase of Psalm 88 from the New Metrical Version of the Psalms. This psalm stands as one of the most solemn and sorrowful prayers in all of Scripture, expressing deep anguish, isolation, and a sense of divine distance. Yet even in such darkness, it begins with a declaration of faith, addressing God as the God of salvation.

Psalm 88:1 opens with a cry to the Lord both day and night, showing persistence in prayer despite overwhelming distress. The psalmist does not turn away from God, even when surrounded by suffering. This teaches that true faith continues to seek God, even when no immediate answer or relief is felt.

The imagery throughout the psalm is heavy and intense. Psalm 42:7 speaks of deep calling unto deep, with waves and billows passing over the soul. Similarly, Psalm 88 describes being overwhelmed, cut off, and laid in the lowest pit. Lamentations 3:1–3 echoes this experience of affliction under the hand of God, portraying the emotional and spiritual weight of suffering.

Unlike many other psalms, Psalm 88 ends without a clear note of resolution or visible hope. Yet its inclusion in Scripture is deeply meaningful. It shows that God receives even the darkest cries of His people. The act of bringing sorrow before God is itself an expression of faith.

Hebrews 4:15 reminds believers that Christ is a High Priest who is touched with the feeling of our infirmities. This connects the psalm to the gospel, assuring believers that their suffering is known and understood by the Lord.

“Lord, the God of My Salvation” is a powerful hymn of lament that gives voice to those in deep trials. It affirms that even when light seems absent, believers can still cry out to God. The hymn teaches that faith is not the absence of sorrow, but the continued turning to God in the midst of it, trusting Him as the only source of salvation.
