My Plea (Should I at the gates of heaven appear)
By J. L. Baker
Lyrics
To answer the challenge, “What claim hast thou here,
What hast thou to offer, yea, what is thy plea?”
With blessed assurance my answer will be.
All that I have is Jesus,
All that I claim is Jesus,
All that I want, All that I need,
All that I plead is Jesus.
No great deeds of merit have I ever wrought.
Tho vile and unworthy as mortal could be,
I’ve nothing to offer but this is my plea.
The blood of my Saviour will carry me though,
When Christ in my place died on Calvary’s tree,
Hallelujah, that opened God’s Heaven to me!

About This Hymn
“My Plea,” written by J. L. Baker, is a humble and searching hymn that centers on the question every soul must eventually face. The opening line, “Should I at the gates of heaven appear,” sets a scene of deep personal reflection, inviting the singer to consider what foundation they would present before a holy God. The hymn does not point to human merit, moral improvement, or religious achievement. Instead, it leads the heart to the single confession that Scripture affirms, the confession that salvation rests entirely upon the name and finished work of Jesus Christ. Romans 10:13 declares that whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved, and this truth shapes the entire spirit of the hymn.
The text guides the believer toward a posture of dependence, not despair. It recognizes human insufficiency, but it does not stop with that recognition. It turns the eyes of the worshipper from self to Christ. The hymn encourages a simple but powerful faith that claims the promise of God without hesitation. It is a hymn that fits well in services focused on personal testimony, salvation appeals, or moments of quiet commitment. The gentle tone invites both the seasoned believer and the seeking soul to rest in the assurance provided by Christ alone. By calling attention to the only plea that can stand before the throne of God, the hymn lifts Christ high and brings comfort to any heart that feels weak or unworthy. Its message affirms that the grace of God is sufficient, the mercy of God is real, and the invitation to trust in Christ is open to all who will call upon His name.
