O Solemn Thought
Lyrics
The hour o judgment now is come
Which soon must fix our destiny,
And seal the sinner’s fearful down?
Yes, it is so; the judgment hour
Is swiftly hastening to its close;
Then will the Judge, in mighty power,
Descend in vengeance on His foes.
An offering for the sins of men,
And then ascended upon on high,
And will e’er long return again,
Is standing now before the ark,
And mercy seat and cherubim,
To plead His blood for saints, and make
The last remembrance of their sin.
When we who have His name confessed,
Each in his lot must singly stand
And pass the final, searching test.
Jesus! we hope in Thee alone;
In mercy now upon us look,
Confess our names before the throne,
And blot our sins from out Thy book.
The full importance of this hour.
Inspire our hearts with holy zeal,
And aid us by Thy Spirit’s power,
That we may in Thy strength be strong,
And brave the conflict valiantly;
Then, on Mount Zion, join the song,
And swell the notes of victory.

About This Hymn
O Solemn Thought” is a reflective and admonitory hymn written by Roswell F. Cottrell, a nineteenth century hymn writer and editor closely associated with early Adventist hymnody. The hymn confronts the worshiper with the seriousness of life, moral accountability, and the certainty of divine judgment. Its tone is reverent and searching, designed to awaken conscience rather than merely comfort emotion.
The central theme of the hymn is human responsibility before God. Drawing on Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, it reminds the singer that life’s ultimate purpose is to fear God and keep His commandments, knowing that every work will be brought into judgment. The hymn does not treat judgment as abstract theology, but as a personal and unavoidable reality that gives weight to every choice made in this life.
Hebrews 9:27 undergirds the hymn’s sober message by affirming that death is followed by judgment. Cottrell’s text encourages thoughtful self-examination, urging believers to live with eternity in view. This solemn awareness is not meant to produce despair, but seriousness, humility, and a renewed commitment to faithful living.
The hymn also reflects the biblical teaching that all people will stand before God’s judgment seat. 2 Corinthians 5:10 emphasizes accountability for deeds done in the body, while Revelation 20:11-15 portrays the final judgment in which God’s justice and righteousness are fully revealed. “O Solemn Thought” places the singer within this biblical framework, calling for readiness and sincere devotion.
Often used in seasons of reflection, revival meetings, or services focused on repentance and preparation, the hymn serves as a spiritual warning and a call to wisdom. Its enduring value lies in its scriptural seriousness and moral clarity, reminding believers that faith is not only comfort and hope, but also responsibility and reverent obedience before a holy God.
