O Thou, in Whose Presence

By Joseph Swain

Lyrics

1. O Thou, in whose presence my soul takes delight,
on whom in affliction I call;
my comfort by day, and my song in the night,
my hope, my salvation, my all.
2. Where dost Thou, dear Shepherd, resort with Thy sheep,
to feed them in pastures of love?
Say, why in the valley of death should I weep,
or alone in this wilderness rove?
3. O why should I wander an alien from Thee,
or cry in the desert for bread?
Thy foes will rejoice, when my sorrows they see,
and smile at the tears I have shed.
4. He looks, and ten thousands of angels rejoice,
and myriads wait for His word;
He speaks and eternity, filled with His voice,
re-echoes the praise of the Lord.
5. Dear Shepherd! I hear, and will follow Thy call;
I know the sweet sound of Thy voice;
restore and defend me, for Thou art my All,
And in Thee I will ever rejoice.

About This Hymn

“O Thou, in Whose Presence” is a tender and devotional hymn written by Joseph Swain in 1791. Swain, a Baptist minister and hymn writer in London, was known for his deeply personal and Christ-centered poetry. This hymn draws heavily from the imagery of the Song of Solomon and the pastoral comfort of Psalm 23, portraying the believer as a sheep seeking the care and nearness of the Good Shepherd. It begins with the longing cry of the soul for the presence of the Lord, the One who alone can satisfy spiritual hunger and guide through life’s valleys.

The hymn paints a vivid picture of Christ as the Shepherd who pastures His flock in green fields and leads them beside still waters, restoring their soul and protecting them from harm. Swain’s lyrics express both a yearning for deeper communion with Christ and a confidence in His guidance and provision. The language is deeply affectionate, showing the believer’s love and dependence on the Savior, while also reflecting the joy and security found in His presence. The recurring theme is one of intimate fellowship, as the soul finds rest only when close to the Lord.

Over the centuries, “O Thou, in Whose Presence” has been cherished in both congregational worship and personal devotion. Its poetic richness and biblical depth have allowed it to resonate across denominational lines, particularly among those who treasure hymns of quiet meditation and heartfelt surrender. Whether sung in public worship or in the solitude of prayer, the hymn continues to lead hearts to the same truth that inspired Joseph Swain more than two centuries ago: that the presence of Christ is the believer’s greatest delight, strength, and hope.
