On This Day Earth Shall Ring
Lyrics
with the song children sing
to the Lord, Christ our King,
born on earth to save us;
him the Father gave us.
Refrain:
Id-e-o-o-o, id-e-o-o-o, id-e-o,
gloria in excelsis Deo!
when he came down to earth,
Bethlehem saw his birth;
ox and ass beside him
from the cold would hide him.
Wise Men three to him led;
kneel they low by his bed,
lay their gifts before him,
praise him and adore him.
with their song earth shall ring,
praising Christ, heaven's King,
born on earth to save us;
peace and love he gave us.

About This Hymn
“On This Day Earth Shall Ring” is a Christmas hymn translated and adapted by Jane Marian Joseph, an English musician, composer, and editor. The hymn is based on a traditional medieval Latin carol titled Personent hodie, which celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and the joyful response of heaven and earth to this event. Joseph’s English version helped introduce this ancient carol to modern congregations and made it widely used in Christmas worship.
The hymn celebrates the joy surrounding the birth of Christ, echoing the announcement of the angels recorded in Luke 2:10–14. In that passage the angel proclaims good news of great joy for all people, declaring that a Savior has been born in the city of David. The hymn reflects this joyful proclamation and invites worshipers to join in praise and celebration.
Another important theme comes from Isaiah 9:6, where the coming Messiah is described as the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. The hymn celebrates the birth of this promised child and acknowledges Him as the Savior given to the world.
The message also reflects Matthew 1:21–23, where the angel tells Joseph that the child will be called Jesus because He will save His people from their sins, and that He will be known as Immanuel, meaning God with us. The hymn rejoices in this truth that God has come to dwell among His people.
In addition, the hymn relates to John 1:14, which declares that the Word became flesh and lived among us. The incarnation of Christ is the central reason for the celebration expressed in the hymn.
“On This Day Earth Shall Ring” remains a joyful Christmas carol sung in many churches. Through its lively language and celebration of Christ’s birth, it invites believers to rejoice in the coming of the Savior and to join the praise of heaven and earth for the gift of God’s Son.
