About This Hymn
The “Sanctus” (Latin for “Holy”) is one of the oldest and most universal hymns of Christian worship, sung for centuries in both Eastern and Western liturgies. Its words come directly from Scripture: Isaiah’s vision of the seraphim crying “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory” (Isaiah 6:3) and John’s vision in Revelation where the heavenly beings continually declare “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty” (Revelation 4:8).
The text “Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth” translates as “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts.” This thrice-repeated acclamation of God’s holiness emphasizes His absolute purity, majesty, and transcendence. The phrase “Deus Sabaoth” (God of hosts) points to His command over the armies of heaven and His sovereign reign over creation.
In Christian worship, the Sanctus is typically sung just before the Eucharistic prayer, forming a bridge between praise and consecration. Its universality across traditions shows its importance: whether in the Latin Mass, Orthodox liturgy, or Protestant adaptations, the Sanctus lifts worshippers into the atmosphere of heaven, joining with angels in adoring God’s holiness.
Musically, it has inspired countless settings by composers throughout history, from Gregorian chant to polyphonic masterpieces and modern arrangements. Its timeless repetition gives it both solemnity and awe, drawing believers to recognize that in worship they stand before the holy God who dwells in unapproachable light.
The Sanctus remains one of the most enduring hymns of Christian praise, uniting worshippers across centuries and cultures in declaring the eternal holiness of God.
