Sleep, Baby, Sleep
By Ferd. F. Buermeyer
Lyrics
Thy father guards the sheep,
Thy mother shakes the dreamland tree,
And from it fall sweet dreams for thee;
Sleep, baby, sleep!
Sleep, baby, sleep!
The large stars are the sheep,
The little ones the lambs, I guess,
The gentle moon the shepherdess,
Sleep, baby, sleep!
Sleep, baby, sleep!
Our Savior loves His sheep,
He is the Lamb of God on high,
Who for our sakes came down to die,
Sleep, baby, sleep!
Sleep, baby, sleep!

About This Hymn
“Sleep, Baby, Sleep” is a gentle cradle hymn that has its roots in a traditional German lullaby. The English version most widely circulated was translated by Ferd. F. Buermeyer in the nineteenth century and adapted for use in hymnals and Christmas song collections. Its tender words and soothing melody connect the universal image of a mother’s lullaby with the sacred birth of Christ in Bethlehem, allowing worshippers to reflect on the quiet humility of the nativity.
The hymn portrays the infant Christ resting peacefully while surrounded by the love of God and the adoration of His earthly parents. It often contrasts the simplicity of the manger scene with the majesty of the Child’s identity as the Savior of the world. The refrain, “Sleep, baby, sleep,” functions both as a literal lullaby and as a call for worshippers to contemplate the peace that Christ brings to the believer’s heart.
Over the years, “Sleep, Baby, Sleep” has been included in both Protestant and Catholic hymnals, Christmas songbooks, and collections of sacred carols for children. Its enduring appeal lies in its combination of folk-like tenderness and devotional reverence, making it a favorite for Christmas services, children’s choirs, and family gatherings. Like the shepherds at the manger, the singer joins in adoration of the Christ Child through a lullaby of love and trust.
