Soldiers Of Christ, Arise

By Charles Wesley

Lyrics

1. Soldiers of Christ, arise,
and put your armor on,
strong in the strength which God supplies
thro' His eternal Son;
strong in the Lord of hosts
and in His mighty pow'r,
who in the strength of Jesus trusts
is more than conqueror.
2. Stand then in His great might,
with all His strength endued,
and take, to aid you in the fight,
the panoply of God.
From strength to strength go on,
wrestle and fight and pray;
tread all the pow'rs of darkness down
and win the well-fought day.
3. Leave no unguarded place,
no weakness of the soul;
take every virtue, every grace,
and fortify the whole.
That, having all things done
and all your conflicts past,
ye may o'ercome thro' Christ alone
and stand complete at last.

About This Hymn

"Soldiers of Christ, Arise" is a powerful hymn written by Charles Wesley in 1749, drawing deeply from the Apostle Paul's imagery of the Christian's spiritual armor in Ephesians 6:10-18. Wesley, a prolific hymn writer and key figure in the Methodist movement, used this hymn to encourage believers to embrace steadfastness in their faith and to courageously engage in spiritual warfare with unwavering trust in God. Its lyrics are both a rallying cry and a solemn charge, emphasizing that the Christian life is not one of ease but one of perseverance, prayer, and discipline under the leadership of Christ.

The hymn opens with an exhortation for believers to rise and take up their armor, echoing the biblical call to be strong in the Lord and in His might. Wesley crafts his poetry with commanding language, instructing believers to put on each piece of spiritual armor: the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and sword of the Spirit. These vivid metaphors remind Christians of their dependence on God's strength and their need for constant vigilance. Wesley’s hymn offers a deeply scriptural perspective on discipleship, calling each believer to be active and alert in the spiritual battles of life.

First published in the Hymns and Sacred Poems collection, this hymn reflects Wesley's theological emphasis on holiness, spiritual discipline, and the necessity of prayer. The structure and language of the hymn make it suitable for congregational singing, and it has been widely used in Methodist, Anglican, and other Protestant hymnals for centuries. Its enduring legacy lies in its ability to inspire Christians to remain steadfast and committed, relying not on human strength but on the power of God’s Spirit. The hymn continues to encourage believers to stand firm against temptation and to trust wholly in Christ as their source of victory.
