Son of God, Eternal Savior

By Somerset Corry Lowry

Lyrics

1. Son of God, eternal Savior,
source of life and truth and grace,
Word made flesh, whose birth among us,
hallows all our human race,
you our head, who, throned in glory,
for your own will ever plead:
fill us with your love and pity,
heal our wrongs and help our need.
2. Bind us all as one together
in your Church’s sacred fold,
weak and healthy, poor and wealthy,
sad and joyful, young and old.
Is there want or pain or sorrow?
Make us all the burden share.
Are there spirits crushed and broken?
Teach us, Lord, to soothe their care.
3. As you, Lord, have lived for others,
so may we for others live.
Freely have your gifts been granted;
freely may your servants give.
Yours the gold and yours the silver,
yours the wealth of land and sea;
we but stewards of your bounty
held in solemn trust will be.
4. Son of God, eternal Savior,
source of life and truth and grace,
Word made flesh, whose birth among us
hallows all our human race,
by your praying, by your willing
that your people should be one,
grant, O grant our hope’s fruition:
here on earth your will be done.

About This Hymn

Son of God, Eternal Savior is one of the most theologically rich hymns written by Somerset Corry Lowry, an Irish hymn writer known for his deep reverence for Christ and his strong Trinitarian emphasis. This hymn stands as a clear confession of orthodox Christian faith, presenting Jesus Christ as fully divine, eternally existent, and actively involved in the work of creation, redemption, and the ongoing life of the Church.

The hymn opens by affirming the eternal Sonship of Christ, echoing the testimony of John’s Gospel that the Word was with God and was God. Christ is not portrayed as a created being or a temporary messenger, but as the eternal Savior who shares the glory of the Father. This strong Christological foundation is essential, especially in an age when the person and nature of Christ are often misunderstood or diminished.

Lowry moves from doctrine to devotion by connecting Christ’s eternal nature with His redemptive mission. The Son of God who existed before all worlds willingly entered human history to save fallen humanity. This reflects the biblical teaching of Philippians 2, where Christ humbles Himself, takes on the form of a servant, and becomes obedient unto death. The hymn invites worshipers to respond not only with belief, but with submission, love, and praise.

Another key theme is unity in Christ. The hymn prays for the Church to be one, grounded in love, truth, and obedience to the Savior. This aligns with Christ’s own prayer in John 17 and underscores the hymn’s relevance for both personal devotion and corporate worship. Faith in the eternal Son leads naturally to a life shaped by His character and mission.

Son of God, Eternal Savior is especially fitting for Trinity Sunday, Christological teaching services, and times of doctrinal instruction within the Church. It combines sound theology with heartfelt worship, helping believers confess who Christ truly is while renewing their commitment to live under His lordship.
