The Day is Past and Over
By St. Anatolius of Constantinople
Lyrics
all thanks, O Lord, to thee;
I pray thee that sinless
the hours of dark may be:
O Jesu, keep me in thy sight,
and guard me through the coming night.
I lift my heart to thee,
and ask thee that offenceless
the hours of dark may be:
O Jesu, keep me in thy sight,
and guard me through the coming night.
I lift my heart to thee,
and ask that free from peril
the hours of dark may be:
O Jesu, keep me in thy sight,
and guard me through the coming night.
for thou alone dost know
how many are the perils
through which I have to go:
O loving Jesu, hear my call,
and guard and save me from them all.

About This Hymn
“The Day Is Past and Over” is an ancient evening hymn originally attributed to St. Anatolius of Constantinople, a 5th century bishop. The hymn was later translated into English in 1853 by John Mason Neale, who played a major role in bringing early Greek and Latin hymns into English speaking worship.
The hymn is designed for evening devotion, offering a prayer of thanksgiving and trust at the close of the day. It reflects the spirit of Psalm 4:8, where the psalmist expresses confidence in lying down in peace and safety under God’s care. The hymn encourages believers to rest in the assurance of God’s protection through the night.
Another key theme is divine protection. Psalm 91:1–5 speaks of dwelling under the shadow of the Almighty and being far from fear and danger. The hymn echoes this trust, asking God to guard and keep His people as they sleep.
The message also connects with Luke 24:29, where the disciples urge the Lord to stay with them as evening approaches. This reflects the believer’s desire for Christ’s presence, not only during the day but also through the night.
Additionally, the hymn expresses confidence similar to 2 Timothy 1:12, where Paul declares that he knows whom he has believed and trusts Him to keep what has been committed. The hymn invites worshipers to entrust themselves fully to God’s care.
“The Day Is Past and Over” continues to be used as a peaceful and reflective evening hymn. Through its simple yet profound message, it guides believers to end the day with gratitude, repentance, and trust, resting securely in the presence and protection of God.
