The Lord Is King, Lift Up Your Voice

By Josiah Conder

Lyrics

1. The Lord is King! lift up thy voice,
O earth, and all ye heavens, rejoice;
from world to world the joy shall ring,
'The Lord omnipotent is King!'
2. The Lord is King! who then shall dare
resist his will, distrust his care,
or murmur at his wise decrees,
or doubt his royal promises?
3. He reigns! ye saints, exalt your strains;
your God is King, your Father reigns;
and he is at the Father's side,
the Man of love, the Crucified.
4. Alike pervaded by his eye
all parts of his dominion lie:
this world of ours and worlds unseen,
and thin the boundary between!
5. One Lord one empire all secures;
he reigns, and life and death are yours;
through earth and heaven one song shall ring,
'The Lord omnipotent is King!'

Psalm 93:1; Psalm 97:1; Revelation 19:6; Isaiah 52:7

About This Hymn

“The Lord Is King, Lift Up Your Voice” is a triumphant hymn by Josiah Conder that celebrates the sovereign reign of God and calls believers to respond with joyful praise. The hymn is rooted in the biblical declaration that the Lord reigns, a truth that brings assurance, stability, and hope to His people.

The opening theme reflects Psalm 93:1, which proclaims, “The Lord reigneth, he is clothed with majesty.” This emphasis on God’s kingship is central to the hymn, reminding worshipers that God rules over all creation with authority and power. Similarly, Psalm 97:1 declares that the Lord reigns and calls the earth to rejoice, a message that is echoed in the hymn’s invitation to lift up the voice in praise.

The hymn also points forward to the ultimate fulfillment of God’s reign, as described in Revelation 19:6, where a great multitude in heaven proclaims, “Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.” This vision of eternal praise reinforces the hymn’s call for believers to join in worship even now.

Another important theme is the proclamation of good news, reflected in Isaiah 52:7, which speaks of those who bring glad tidings and announce that God reigns. The hymn carries this sense of joyful proclamation, encouraging believers not only to rejoice but also to declare the truth of God’s kingship to others.

“The Lord Is King, Lift Up Your Voice” remains a powerful expression of praise because it directs attention to the unchanging rule of God. In a world of uncertainty, the hymn provides confidence and encouragement, reminding believers that the Lord is King and worthy of all honor, praise, and adoration.
