The Old Rugged Cross
By George Bennard
Lyrics
the emblem of suffering and shame;
and I love that old cross where the dearest and best
for a world of lost sinners was slain.
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
and exchange it some day for a crown.
has a wondrous attraction for me;
for the dear Lamb of God left his glory above
to bear it to dark Calvary.
a wondrous beauty I see,
for 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
to pardon and sanctify me.
its shame and reproach gladly bear;
then he'll call me some day to my home far away,
where his glory forever I'll share.

About This Hymn
"The Old Rugged Cross" was written in 1912 by evangelist and hymn writer George Bennard during a period of personal spiritual struggle and reflection on the meaning of Christ’s sacrifice. While meditating on the significance of the cross, he began composing both the lyrics and melody, eventually finishing the hymn in Pokagon, Michigan, where it was first performed at a revival meeting. The hymn quickly gained popularity for its emotional depth and clear expression of Christian faith centered on the cross of Jesus. It has since become one of the most beloved and enduring hymns in American gospel music history.
