Thy Mercy, My God

By John Stocker

Lyrics

1. Thy mercy, my God, is the theme of my song;
The joy of my heart and the boast of my tongue:
Thy free grace alone, from the first to the last,
Hath won my affections, and bound my soul fast.

2 Without thy free mercy I could not live here;
Sin soon would reduce me to utter despair:
But, thro' thy free goodness, my spirits revive,
And he that first made me, still keeps me alive.

3 Whene'er I mistake, thy kind mercy begins
To melt me and then I can mourn for my sins;
And, led by the Spirit to Jesus's blood,
My sorrows are dry'd and my strength is renew'd.

4 Thy mercy is more than a match for my heart
Which wonders to feel its own hardness depart;
Dissolv'd by thy sun-shine, I fall to the ground
And weep to the praise of the mercy I found.

5 Thy mercy is endless, most tender and free;
No sinner need doubt, since 'tis given to me;
No merit will buy it, nor fears stop its course;
Good works are the fruits of its freeness and force.

6 Thy mercy in Jesus exempts me from hell;
Its glories I'll sing, and its wonders I'll tell;
'Twas Jesus my friend when he hung on the tree,
That open'd the channel of mercy for me.

7 Great Father of mercies, thy goodness I own,
And covenant love of thy crucified Son;
All praise to the Spirit whose witness divine
Seals mercy and pardon, and righteousness MINE.

Psalm 63:3; Lamentations 3:22–23; Ephesians 2:4–5; Hebrews 4:16

About This Hymn

“Thy Mercy, My God” is a devotional hymn attributed to John Stocker that centers on the greatness and sweetness of God’s mercy toward sinners. The hymn expresses a deeply personal response to divine grace, focusing on the believer’s awareness of unworthiness and God’s abundant compassion.

The opening thought reflects Psalm 63:3, “Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.” The hymn captures this sense of wonder, presenting God’s mercy as more valuable than anything earthly. It is not merely acknowledged but cherished and adored.

The hymn also echoes Lamentations 3:22–23, which reminds believers that the Lord’s mercies are new every morning and that His faithfulness is great. This ongoing mercy provides assurance and hope, especially for those who recognize their need for continual grace.

Another important theme is the richness of God’s love, as described in Ephesians 2:4–5, where God, being rich in mercy, makes believers alive together with Christ even when they were dead in sins. The hymn reflects this transformation, moving from a sense of guilt to a joyful recognition of forgiveness.

The tone of the hymn is prayerful, drawing the believer toward God with confidence. Hebrews 4:16 encourages coming boldly to the throne of grace to obtain mercy and find help in time of need. This invitation is mirrored in the hymn’s emphasis on trusting in God’s mercy rather than one’s own merit.

“Thy Mercy, My God” continues to be valued for its heartfelt devotion and theological depth. It leads worshipers to meditate on the greatness of God’s mercy and to respond with gratitude, humility, and praise for His unfailing love.
