Today Thy Mercy Calls Me

By Oswald Allen

Lyrics

1. Today your mercy calls us
to wash away our sin.
However great our trespass,
whatever we have been,
however long from mercy
our hearts have turned away,
your precious blood can wash us
and make us clean today.
2. Today your gate is open,
and all who enter in
shall find a Father's welcome
and pardon for their sin.
The past shall be forgotten,
a present joy be giv'n,
a future grace be promised,
a glorious crown in heav'n.
3. Today our Father calls us,
his Holy Spirit waits;
his blessed angels gather
around the heav'nly gates.
No question will be asked us
how often we have come;
although we oft have wandered,
it is our Father's home.
4. O all-embracing Mercy,
O ever-open Door,
what should we do without you
when heart and eye run o'er?
When all things seem against us,
to drive us to despair,
we know one gate is open,
one ear will hear our prayer.

About This Hymn

“Today Thy Mercy Calls Me” is a hymn by Oswald Allen that presents a clear and urgent gospel invitation. It emphasizes the immediacy of God’s call to sinners, urging them not to delay in responding to His mercy. The message closely reflects 2 Corinthians 6:2, which declares, “behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” The hymn captures this sense of urgency, reminding listeners that God’s grace is available in the present moment.

The theme of repentance is central to the hymn. Isaiah 55:6–7 calls sinners to seek the Lord while He may be found and to turn from wicked ways, with the promise that God will abundantly pardon. This truth is echoed in the hymn’s repeated invitation to return to God and receive forgiveness.

The hymn also reflects the compassionate invitation of Christ in Matthew 11:28–30, where He calls the weary and burdened to come to Him for rest. It presents Jesus as gentle and willing to receive all who come in humility and faith.

Additionally, the imagery of the returning sinner in Luke 15:18–20, from the parable of the prodigal son, is evident in the hymn’s tone. The call to arise and go to the Father, trusting in His mercy, is a powerful expression of the gospel message.

“Today Thy Mercy Calls Me” has long been used in evangelistic settings because of its direct and heartfelt appeal. It not only presents the truth of God’s mercy but also urges a personal response, calling each listener to turn to Christ without delay. Through its message, the hymn continues to point sinners to the grace, forgiveness, and rest found in the Savior.
