We Praise Thee, O God

By Julia C. Cory

Lyrics

1. We praise you, O God, our Redeemer, Creator;
in grateful devotion our tribute we bring;
we lay it before you; we kneel and adore you;
we bless your holy name: glad praises we sing.
2. We worship you, God of our fathers and mothers;
through life's storm and tempest our guide you have been;
when perils o'ertake us, you never forsake us,
and with your help, O Lord, our battles we win.
3. With voices united our praises we offer,
our songs of thanksgiving to you we now raise;
your strong arm will guide us, our God is beside us,
to you, our great Redeemer, forever be praise!

Psalm 107:1; Psalm 150:1–6; 1 Thessalonians 5:18; Hebrews 13:15

About This Hymn

“We Praise Thee, O God” is a joyful hymn of thanksgiving written by Julia C. Cory. It is a paraphrase inspired by a Dutch hymn, and it expresses heartfelt gratitude to God for His love, redemption, and ongoing care. The hymn is widely used in worship services as a song of praise, often sung with enthusiasm and a sense of celebration.

The central theme of the hymn is thanksgiving. Psalm 107:1 declares, “O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.” This spirit of gratitude fills the hymn, as it calls believers to acknowledge God’s goodness and faithfulness. It also reflects Psalm 150:1–6, which encourages praising God with all available means, celebrating His mighty acts and excellent greatness.

Another key emphasis is continual praise in all circumstances, aligning with 1 Thessalonians 5:18, which instructs believers to give thanks in everything. The hymn encourages a lifestyle of gratitude, not limited to specific moments but expressed continually in the life of the believer.

The hymn also highlights the sacrifice of praise mentioned in Hebrews 13:15, where believers are called to offer praise to God through Christ. This reminds worshipers that their praise is not only an expression of joy but also an act of devotion and obedience.

“We Praise Thee, O God” remains a beloved hymn because of its uplifting message and its ability to unite congregations in joyful worship. It calls believers to lift their voices together in gratitude, celebrating the goodness, mercy, and love of God that endures forever.
