We Sing the Praise of Him Who Died

By Thomas Kelly

Lyrics

1. We sing the praise of him who died,
of him who died upon the cross;
the sinner's hope let men deride,
for this we count the world but loss.
2. Inscribed upon the cross we see
in shining letters, 'God is love';
he bears our sins upon the tree;
he brings us mercy from above.
3. The cross! It takes our guilt away:
it holds the fainting spirit up;
it cheers with hope the gloomy day,
and sweetens every bitter cup.
4. It makes the coward spirit brave,
and nerves the feeble arm for fight;
it takes its terror from the grave,
and gilds the bed of death with light:
5. The balm of life, the cure of woe,
the measure and the pledge of love,
the sinner's refuge here below,
the angels' theme in heaven above.

About This Hymn

“We Sing the Praise of Him Who Died” is a hymn by Thomas Kelly that centers on the atoning death of Jesus Christ and the believer’s response of worship. The hymn calls attention to the cross as the foundation of salvation and the source of all Christian hope and joy.

The message of the hymn is deeply rooted in Revelation 5:9–12, where the redeemed and the heavenly host praise the Lamb who was slain and has redeemed people to God by His blood. This vision of worship is reflected in the hymn’s focus on exalting Christ for His sacrificial death.

The hymn also echoes Galatians 6:14, where Paul declares that he will glory only in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. The cross, often seen as a symbol of shame by the world, is presented in the hymn as the believer’s greatest boast and the clearest display of God’s love and justice.

Another key theme is the proclamation of Christ crucified, as emphasized in 1 Corinthians 1:23–24. While the message of the cross may be a stumbling block to some, it is the power and wisdom of God to those who believe. The hymn encourages believers to boldly proclaim and rejoice in this truth.

Hebrews 12:2 further enriches the hymn’s message by pointing to Jesus, who endured the cross for the joy set before Him. This reminds worshipers that the suffering of Christ was purposeful and victorious, leading to the salvation of His people.

“We Sing the Praise of Him Who Died” remains a powerful and reverent hymn that directs attention to the central truth of the gospel. It calls believers to respond with heartfelt praise, acknowledging that their redemption was purchased through the death of Christ and celebrating the love that made such a sacrifice possible.
