We Utter Our Cry

By Fred Kaan

Lyrics

1. We utter our cry: that peace may prevail!
That earth will survive and faith must not fail.
We pray with our life for the world in our care,
for people diminished by doubt and despair.
2. We cry from the fright of our daily scene
for strength to say "no" to all that is mean:
designs bearing chaos, extinction of life,
all energy wasted on weapons of death.
3. We lift up our hearts for children unborn:
give wisdom, O God, that we may hand on,
replenished and tended, this good planet earth,
preserving the future and wonder of birth.

Psalm 130:1–2; Romans 8:22–26; Lamentations 3:55–57; Psalm 34:17

About This Hymn

“We Utter Our Cry” is a hymn by Fred Kaan, a Dutch born hymn writer and minister known for addressing themes of justice, suffering, and the cries of humanity in his texts. This hymn expresses a collective cry to God from a world marked by pain, need, and longing for redemption.

The hymn reflects the language of Psalm 130:1–2, where the psalmist cries out to the Lord from the depths, seeking mercy and attentive listening. This sense of urgency and dependence on God forms the heart of the hymn’s message.

Another important theme is the groaning of creation described in Romans 8:22–26. The hymn captures the reality that both creation and believers experience suffering and longing, while the Spirit intercedes with groanings that cannot be expressed. It presents prayer not only as words but as deep cries from the heart.

The hymn also connects with Lamentations 3:55–57, where the writer calls upon the Lord from the lowest point and finds reassurance in God’s nearness and response. This reflects the hope that even in distress, God hears and answers.

Additionally, the message aligns with Psalm 34:17, which teaches that the righteous cry and the Lord hears and delivers them out of their troubles. The hymn emphasizes trust that God is attentive to the cries of His people.

“We Utter Our Cry” serves as both a prayer and a lament, giving voice to human suffering while pointing to God as the source of hope and deliverance. Through its message, the hymn encourages believers to bring their deepest needs before God, trusting in His mercy and faithfulness to hear and respond.
