What A Day That Will Be
By Jim Hill
Lyrics
When no heartaches shall come,
No more clouds in the sky,
No more tears to dim the eye;
All is peace forevermore
On that happy golden shore,
What a day, glorious day that will be.
What a day that will be,
When my Jesus I shall see,
When I look upon His face,
The One who saved me by His grace;
Then He’ll take me by the hand,
And lead me through the Promised Land,
Oh, what a day, glorious day that will be.
No more burdens to bear,
No more sickness, no pain,
No more parting over there;
And forever I will be
With the One who died for me,
Oh, what a day, glorious day that will be.
Oh, what a day, glorious day that will be.

About This Hymn
“What A Day That Will Be” is a gospel song written in 1955 by Jim Hill. The inspiration for the song came from two sources: one was a young orphan girl who had performed at Hill’s church, ending her presentation with the words “What a day that will be,” and the other was Hill’s own mother-in-law, who had been paralyzed by a stroke.
The lyrics look forward to the Christian hope of seeing Jesus face to face, when suffering, sorrow, disease, and parting will all be behind us. This hymn conveys a strong sense of expectation and comfort, drawing on biblical imagery of the Promised Land and the eternal peace we will experience when we are with Christ. It has become a treasured anthem in many Christian communities as a song of hope and encouragement.
The song has been widely recorded and sung in congregational settings, particularly in Southern Gospel and evangelical hymnals. Over time it has become well-known for its optimistic message about the day when the believer’s faith will be fully realized—when we see Christ and experience the fullness of His promises. It remains relevant to this day because it speaks to universal Christian longings for redemption, restoration, and eternal joy.
