When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder
By James M. Black
Lyrics
And the morning breaks, eternal, bright and fair;
When the saved of earth shall gather over on the other shore,
And the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there.
When the roll is called up yonder,
When the roll is called up yonder,
When the roll is called up yonder,
When the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there.
And the glory of his resurrection share;
When his chosen ones shall gather to their home beyond the skies,
And the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there.
Let us talk of all his wondrous love and care.
Then when all of life is over and our work on earth is done,
And the roll is called up yonder, I'll be there.

About This Hymn
"When the Roll Is Called Up Yonder" is a triumphant gospel hymn written and composed by James M. Black in 1893. The inspiration reportedly came when Black, a Methodist Sunday school teacher, noticed a student’s absence during class roll call and thought about the heavenly “roll call” at Christ’s return. The result was this hymn, which quickly gained wide popularity in evangelical circles.
The lyrics focus on the believer’s certainty of being present when God’s people are gathered in heaven, as recorded in the “book of life.” Drawing from Revelation 20:12 and 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17, the hymn portrays the final resurrection and reunion with Christ as a joyful and glorious event.
Black’s lively march-like melody underscores the victory and anticipation of the text, making it a favorite in revival meetings, evangelistic campaigns, and church services for over a century. Its message of readiness and hope continues to encourage Christians to live faithfully in expectation of the Lord’s return.
