About Anna Letitia Waring
Anna Laetitia Waring (1823–1910) was an English hymn writer whose devotional poetry has remained cherished for its simplicity, depth, and spiritual warmth. She was born in 1823 at Neath in Glamorganshire, Wales, the daughter of Elijah Waring, and niece of Samuel Miller Waring. Her upbringing in a thoughtful Christian environment helped shape the reflective and devotional tone that would later characterize her hymns.
Waring devoted much of her life to writing sacred verse, though she lived quietly and without public prominence. In 1850, she published her first collection, Hymns and Meditations, by A. L. W., containing 19 hymns. This collection grew in later editions, reaching 38 hymns by 1863. She also published Additional Hymns in 1858 and contributed writings to the Sunday Magazine in 1871. Her works gradually gained recognition and were incorporated into various hymnals.
Her hymns are especially valued for their personal and contemplative nature. Rather than being elaborate or doctrinally complex, they express a deep trust in God, a sense of quiet dependence, and a peaceful submission to His will. This quality has made them particularly suitable for private devotion as well as congregational worship.
Among her most widely known hymns are:
-
Father, I Know That All My Life
-
In Heavenly Love Abiding
-
My Heart Is Resting, O My God
-
Go Not Far from Me, O My Strength
Other notable hymns include Sweet Is the Solace of Thy Love, Lord, a Happy Child of Thine, and O This Is Blessing, This Is Rest. These hymns emphasize themes such as trust in God, rest in His love, and the believer’s confidence in divine guidance through all circumstances of life.
Waring’s writing is marked by clarity of thought, elegance of expression, and a sincere devotional spirit. Though she did not seek recognition, her hymns have endured and continue to be sung in many parts of the Christian world. Anna Laetitia Waring died in 1910, leaving behind a legacy of gentle yet profound contributions to Christian hymnody.
