About Anna Ölander

Anna Ölander (1861–1939) was a Swedish hymn writer, poet, and translator whose work reflects the spirit of revival and personal devotion that marked much of Scandinavian Christianity in her time. She was born on December 15, 1861, in Linköping, Sweden, the daughter of a teacher and pastor, a background that strongly influenced her early spiritual and literary development.

From a young age, Ölander showed a gift for writing, composing poetry and stories that expressed both creativity and deep religious feeling. Her first published collection, I skymningsstunden (In the Twilight Hour), appeared in 1896. This was followed by additional volumes between 1906 and 1920, establishing her as a respected voice in Swedish devotional literature.

In addition to her literary work, Ölander made important contributions to hymnody. She wrote original hymn texts and also translated several hymns for the first hymnal of the Swedish YMCA. Her writings are firmly rooted in the themes of revival, renewal, and consecration, emphasizing a personal relationship with Christ and the importance of spiritual commitment.

One of her most widely known hymn texts is If I Gained the World, but Lost the Savior, a deeply reflective piece that contrasts worldly success with the eternal value of salvation in Christ. This hymn, translated into multiple languages, has been used in various Christian traditions and continues to resonate with believers for its clear gospel message and heartfelt appeal.

Ölander’s hymns are characterized by simplicity, sincerity, and a strong evangelical tone. They often call the reader or singer to examine their spiritual condition and to choose Christ above all earthly gain.

She spent her life largely in her hometown of Linköping, where she died on October 23, 1939. Though not as widely known internationally as some hymn writers, Anna Ölander’s contributions remain meaningful, especially within Scandinavian and evangelical hymn traditions, where her emphasis on personal faith and devotion continues to inspire.
