About Annie S. Hawks

Annie Sherwood Hawks (1835–1918) was an American hymn writer best remembered for her deeply devotional and widely loved hymn “I Need Thee Every Hour.” She was born on May 28, 1835, in Hoosick. From an early age, she showed a strong interest in poetry and writing, developing a gift that would later bless the Christian church through hymnody.

As an adult, Hawks lived for many years in Brooklyn, where she became actively involved in church life. She was a devoted Christian and a member of the Baptist church, working closely with her pastor, Robert Lowry, who later composed the music for her most famous hymn. Their collaboration resulted in one of the most enduring gospel hymns of the nineteenth century.

In April 1872, during a time of ordinary daily activity rather than crisis, Hawks wrote the words to “I Need Thee Every Hour.” She later testified that the hymn came from a profound sense of dependence on God, rather than from any particular trial. This insight gives the hymn its unique character, expressing not only a need for God in times of difficulty, but a constant reliance upon Him in every moment of life. The message reflects the spirit of John 15:5, where Christ declares, “without me ye can do nothing.”

Hawks contributed many hymns to popular Sunday school collections of her time, including Bright Jewels, Pure Gold, Royal Diadem, and Temple Anthems. Her works were widely used in worship and devotional settings, often emphasizing themes of trust, surrender, service, and the believer’s daily walk with Christ.

Despite writing dozens of hymns, it is “I Need Thee Every Hour” that has secured her lasting place in Christian history. The hymn has been translated into many languages and continues to be sung around the world, cherished for its simplicity and heartfelt expression of spiritual dependence.

Annie S. Hawks lived a long life of quiet faith and service. She passed away in 1918, leaving behind a legacy of hymns that continue to encourage believers to seek God continually. Her writing reminds Christians that true strength is found not in self-reliance, but in a constant, humble dependence upon the Lord.
